What is Spirituality?
Here is the basic thesis of this article: Genuine and wholesome spirituality is the goal of every disciple of Jesus Christ. It is possible that the simplicity of the thesis might either deceive or at worst fail to make a proper impression on the one who reads it. Therefore, let me explain the key word genuine. By genuine, I mean Biblical. For only in the scriptures do we have truth that is indisputable and reliable. With that said, the scripture must be our guide and test for all of our experiences in the spiritual life, for Bible based spirituality is the only genuine spirituality.
The pragmatic importance of this is simply that all experiences of the spiritual life must be subjected to a scriptural test. Therefore if any experience, no matter how real it may seem, fails to pass that test, it must be discarded.
The second keyword in the thesis is “wholesome.” By wholesome I mean “healthy.” There is nothing more devastating to victorious spiritual living than an unhealthy walk with God. An unhealthy spiritual life is the same to me as an unhealthy physical life.
